Chavez Shuns US, Church Attacks

Caracas, Jul 24 (Prensa Latina) President Hugo Chavez called attacks
against Venezuela and other Latin American countries by the US and the
Church signs of US imperial decadence and desperation.

Chavez presented an award to Ecuadorian philosopher and writer Bolivar
Echeverria for his Book Vuelta de Siglo (Turn of the Century).

At the ceremony he warned of threats by US Ambassador to Honduras
Charles Ford against Honduran President Manuel Zelaya for attending in
Managua the Sandinista celebration.

One day later Cardinal Oscar Andres Rodriguez demonstrated his
subservience to the US by lashing at Venezuela and saying that "Chavez
thinks he is God."

President Chavez reminds that as a Catholic he will fight such attacks
with authentic Christian thoughts and Liberation Theology of human
beings.

He also defended Venezuela's right to advance the process of boosting
national awareness of the meaning of the Armed Force's adoption of the
slogan "homeland, socialism or death."

He called it a distinction from capitalist teachings at the School of
the Americas and other ideology centers that trained most of the
dictators that victimized Latin America.
