Production Threatens Water Reserves, Experts Say

Havana, Aug 13 (acn) A group of experts warned Sunday in Stockholm
against a major threat to water reserves posed by the expected mass
production of ethanol and other biofuels for cars.

The concern was voiced out during the opening of World Water Week in
the Swedish capital, taking place August 12-18.

According to Granma newspaper, citing international outlets, the
Stockholm International Water Institute presented a study showing that
the production of biofuels will lead to a doubling of the demand of
water for agriculture. The report says an additional problem will be
posed by the enormous areas needed to grow the raw materials to be
transformed into biofuels.

World Water Week brings together 2,500 participants from 140 countries
and has been held since the beginning of the 1990s. It is known as the
main international forum dealing with the use of water, environmental
protection, and the fair distribution of water.
