Cuban 5 Deserve Their Freedom and Nobel Peace Prize: Dominican Lawyer

Havana, August 14 (acn) The five Cuban anti-terrorist fighters unjustly
held in US prisons deserve their freedom and the Nobel Peace Prize,
said the president of the American Lawyers Association, Dominican
Alfonso Torres Ulloa.

In an article published on Tuesday by Granma online newspaper, Torres
Ulloa points out that "the Five" have given their best for their people
and humanity, and that they deserve compensation from the United
States, which has violated their most basic human rights.

"We can't continue to stand by and watch such injustice coming from the
courts where supposedly justice should reign. It turns out that where
justice should be carried out, there is only injustice," said the
Dominican lawyer.

Torres Ulloa also blasted the long chain of violations and
incoherencies in the trial carried out against Gerardo Hernandez, Rene
Gonzalez, Ramon Labanino, Antonio Guerrero and Fernando Gonzalez,
internationally known as "the Cuban Five."

The Five, who have been held behind bars for the last eight years, were
charged with espionage and punished with extremely harsh sentences for
infiltrating anti-Cuba organizations based in Miami. They were there
trying to prevent terrorist actions against the island.

Torres recalled that on August 20, the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals of
Atlanta will hold a hearing on the Cuban Five's appeal, another
important step in the struggle for their freedom.

"(The hearing) occurs amid a global campaign demanding respect for the
Five's rights, demanding their freedom and condemning the US for abuse
of power, intolerance and arrogance," said Torres.
