Cuban Hospital Included In UN Environmental Project

Havana, August 15 (acn) The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)
has included the Guillermo Garcia hospital, in the eastern Cuban
province of Las Tunas, in a project to promote the reduction of global
emissions of Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS).

The decision is in line with Cuba's observance of the Montreal Protocol
and other international regulations related to reducing the use of
chlorofluorocarbons (CFC), which seriously affect the atmosphere and
threaten life on the planet.

The Cuban hospital has replaced its outdated air conditioners with new
energy-saving and eco-friendly systems that do not produce CFC.

The UNDP's project is also promoted by the Canadian Environmental
Agency, several Canadian companies and Cuba's Technical Office on Ozone.

Candido Mena, an environment specialist from Las Tunas, said that,
beginning in the 1990s, his province has implemented an efficient
program to progressively eliminate the use of CFS in air conditioners
and refrigerators.

The ozone depleting substances are responsible for the direct incidence
of ultraviolet rays into the biosphere that cause skin cancer and other
diseases. They also negatively affect the vegetative cycle of plants.
