[The mainstream Chavez-hating US press began having a field day
with the constitutional reform since it was presented. Expect lots more
Hugo-bashing, but in Venezuela, the Bolivarian Revolution and Hugo
Chavez enjoy impressive support from the people -- as every election
attests. -NY Transfer]

Chavez Presents Draft Constitutional Reform
Havana, Aug 16 (acn) Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez presented a draft
constitutional reform before the National Assembly of that country
seeking to speed up the transformation process towards socialism.
The Bolivarian leader said modifying 33 items in the Venezuelan
constitution was of the utmost importance, since the constitution was
issued in a period when socialism was off the country's agenda,
reported Granma newspaper Thursday.
The Bolivarian president's constitutional reform includes social,
economic and military changes. Among the most relevant changes is the
possibility of indefinite reelection of the president, thus eliminating
the current limit to two terms in office.
In addition, the proposal includes restructuring of the country's
territorial-political division, as a new "geometry of power."
Chavez encouraged parliamentarians to thoroughly discuss the proposed
new reforms. He noted that the Venezuelan people have never been as
involved in the drawing up, discussion and approval of the constitution
as they are now, while highlighting that a popular referendum will be
held on the document.
