US Spy Plane Reported Shot Down over Abkhazia

Abkhazia confirms plane has crashed

SUKHUMI - The chief of the military general staff of Georgia's
breakaway Abkhazia region, Anatoly Zaitsev, on Saturday confirmed a
report that an aircraft crashed over Abkhazia on Wednesday night but
said the plane had most likely been "an American reconnaissance
aircraft."

Georgian television, citing eyewitnesses, said on Friday that a foreign
aircraft had been shot down overthe Kodori Gorge in Abkhazia.

On Wednesday night, Abkhaz radar and army posts spotted an aircraft
over the Black Sea in the vicinity of Abkhazia,  Zaitsev told reporters
in Sukhumi.

He said he had himself seen "an aircraft in the sky over the sea that
was coming from the area of Turkey and was making no noise."

"The aircraft was going down, a volley of bluish smoke was coming after
it, and there were two large fragments flying behind its tail from
inertia for a while. One of them is believed to have fallen in the
lower part of the Kodori Gorge," Zaitsev said.

"There are no aircraft of this type in the Georgian air force," he
said.  "Most likely, it was an American reconnaissance aircraft."
