Hondurans Block Main Roads

Tegucigalpa, Aug 26 (Prensa Latina) Thousands of Hondurans Monday
blocked roads after a call made by the National Coordinator of Popular
Resistance to protest the socio-economic crisis and defend natural
resources.

Protestors demanded new drinking water, forestry and mining
legislation, the suspension of construction of dams and environmental
protection.

They also condemned feminicide, demanded fulfillment of the
International Labor Organization's 169 indigenous rights accord and the
approval of an integral agrarian law.

Sergio Rivera, president of the Junior School Professors College,
stated that authorities claim the march is to request salary increases,
but the real reason is to defend forests, water and agrarian reform,
among others.

Members of the group are commemorating with this one the March of
Dignity of 40,000 people held in this capital in August 2003, as a
rejection to the administration by former President Ricardo Maduro
(2002-2006).
