Nomination of Candidates for General Elections Begins in Cuba
Havana, September 3 (acn) A total of 204 candidates for municipal
assemblies were nominated in the first day of the process of nomination
of candidates that began last Saturday with a high level of
participation.
More than 28,500 electors, 86.1 % of residents in the districts where
the assemblies to nominate candidates took place, participated in this
important phase, according to Tomas Amaran Diaz, secretary yo the
National Electoral Commission (NEC).
In spite of the inclemency of the weather, 198 of the scheduled
assemblies took place. According to Amaran, two candidates were
nominated in six of them because they are small districts in which
people should nominate at least two candidates.
Amaran told Granma news daily that 27.9% of the nominees are women and
17.7% are 35 years old or younger.
Among those nominated are members of municipal and provincial
assemblies and also members of the national Parliament.
The Cuban government formally called for general elections on July 9.
The first stage entails the appointment of municipal delegates, while
the provincial delegates and the parliamentary deputies will be elected
in the second stage.
