Europe, US Negotiate Kosovo's Future with Serbia

Belgrade, Sep 3 (Prensa Latina) European negotiator for Kosovo's
statute, German Ambassador to the UK Wolfgang Ischinger, met with
Serbian President Boris Tadic on Monday in Belgrade.

According to official Tanjug News Agency, Ischinger met later with
Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic, and will meet Prime Minister Vojislav
Kostunica on Tuesday.

The visit of German Ischinger, part of a trio that includes Russian and
US diplomats Alexander Botsan-Kharchenko and Frank Wisner,
respectively, is part of the consultations held by three of the Contact
Group for Kosovo: Germany, the United States, France, Great Britain,
Italy, and Russia.

Foreign Minister Jeremic stated before the European envoy's arrival
that such meetings were preparatory for direct talks about the future
of that province between Serbians and Albanian Kosovars, scheduled for
late September in New York.

Kosovo is part of Serbia and the respective positions are diametrically
opposed: Albanian Kosovars, the majority, only want complete
independence, while the Serbians accept, at the most, a comprehensive
autonomy under international supervision.
