Cuban Work in Pediatrics Recognized at World Forum
Havana, September 4 (acn) Cuba was appointed as a member of the
Permanent Council of the International Pediatrics Association (IPA) for
the 2007-2010 three-year period for its outstanding results in the
field.
During the 25th World Congress on Pediatrics that concluded over the
weekend in Athens, Greece, with the participation of more than six
thousand specialists from 133 countries, it was announced that
Professor and Doctor on Medical Sciences Fernando Dominguez Dieppa, who
is also the President of the Cuban Pediatrics Association, will hold
the island's post.
Speaking to ACN, Dominguez Dieppa stressed that the appointment was in
recognition of the Cuban achievements in the field that include the
fact that Cuba has already attained the millennium goals in children's
health, which is only a dream for other nations.
Dominguez Dieppa is the second Cuban personality to hold this post in
the world leading pediatrics organization. The first one was Professor
and Doctor Enzo Dueñas, currently the Honorary President of the Cuban
Pediatrics Association, who was the President of the Latin American
Pediatrics Association in the late 1980s.
During the World Congress on Pediatrics, the Cuban delegates spoke of
their achievements in the sector, including the excellent infant
mortality rate achieved on the island in 2006: 5.3 deaths per every
1000 live births, one of the lowest in the world and even better than
that of the United States, which is seven.
Cuba's experience in the prevention and handling of early and late
infections in children was another important part of the Cuban
delegates' presentation at the world forum.
