Australians Protest against Bush's Visit
Canberra, Sept 4 (Prensa Latina) Australians protested on Tuesday
against US President George W. Bush's visit to Sydney, where he will
attend a meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum.
Bush is accompanied by a 700-strong delegation that includes government
officials, Secret Service agents, bodyguards, close friends and
journalists.
Closely watched by security forces, the demonstrators were chanting
"Bush, Go Home".
Stop Bush Coalition spokesman Alex Bainbridge pointed out that it is an
intimidation strategy to prevent people from participating in
demonstrations against the US president.
Bush, who arrived in Australia from Iraq, will meet with Prime Minister
John Howard on Wednesday.
The police arrested a group of environmentalists from the organization
Young People against Climate Change, who chained themselves to coal
loaders in the port of New Castle.
Group Spokesman Nicky Ison said their action was aimed at protesting
against the APEC meetings, which do not deal with the actions to be
taken to prevent climate change.
