California Heat Wave Kills 25

Washington, Sep 7 (Prensa Latina) More than a week of excessively high
temperatures has taken the lives of nearly 25 people in California and
caused repeated power failures from excessive use.

State officials confirmed on Friday that in the last three days at
least five more people died in the southern part of the state due to
the intense heat.

California suffered one of the most mortal heat waves last year with
140 deaths, the highest rate since 1955.

In Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, thermometers reached a phenomenal 113
degrees with minimum relative humidity, and residents complained of
limited federal assistance.

Most of the deaths are elderly people who are more vulnerable to
asphyxiation, heart attack and dehydration.
