Brit Unions Warn Government

London, Sep 7 (Prensa Latina) Powerful British Trade Union Congress
General Secretary Brendan Barber warned the government on Friday
against the consequences it could face if it continues its "rigid and
unjustified" restriction of public funds.

He called politicians to reflect on the political and economic cost of
limiting wage increases to two percent, because it causes "anger and
resentment" among lower income workers.

Barber also recalled that the current policy of budget cuts, which lead
to salary agreements lower than the inflation rate, has a negative
effect on workers, who transfer their worries to relatives and friends.

Those feelings affect how people vote, as well as their perception of
how the government processes public services, despite millions invested
in the sector, he said.

The Financial Times daily reported just two weeks ago that the military
invasion of Iraq has cost $12.7 billion of public funds, a third over
the sum of money originally budgeted.
