Cuban Doctors Hav Seen 5,000+ Hurricane Felix Victims in Nicaragua
Havana, Sept 10 (acn) The 61 Cuban doctors serving in the Nicaraguan
municipalities of Puerto Cabeza and Waspam have treated over 5,000
victims of hurricane Felix which last week hit Nicaragua's North
Atlantic Autonomous Region (RAAN).
The Cuban physicians have established tent hospitals in the disaster
area where the natural phenomenon caused 65 deaths and 134 missing
people, according to official reports.
The Cuban ambassador in Nicaragua, Luis Hernandez, visited the island's
medical staff, toured several communities in the RAAN, and met with
local authorities in the region.
Cuba's cooperation with Nicaragua in the field of healthcare began in
last April with the opening of an ophthalmologic clinic near the
capital Managua. There are currently 208 Cuban health workers serving
in that Central American nation.
The head of the Cuban international brigade, Luis Carlos Avila, said
prevention campaigns are being carried out in the hurricane-hit
communities where a slight increase in diarrhea cases have been
reported.
