Animal Sicknesses Spreading Globally, Warns FAO

Havana, Oct 8 (acn) The UN Food and Agriculture Organization FAO warned
on Monday that globalization, transportation of goods and tourism are
allowing viruses to move freely and animal diseases are spreading
throughout the world.

"All countries are at risk", stressed FAO chief veterinarian Joseph
Domenech. "The Bluetongue virus (also called catarrhal fever), an
infection originally from Africa that severely affects sheep has been
recently found in Germany, Holland, northern France and Great Britain",
he exemplified.

Early detection of viruses, adoption of preventive and control
measures, strong political support and funds for adequate animal health
and veterinary services are imperative, he stressed.

However, the expert sustained, a large number of countries are not
ready to face this new threat, concludes the article by Prensa Latina
online news.
