Honduran President Arrives in Cuba on Tuesday

Havana, Oct 9 (acn) The President of the Republic of Honduras, Jose
Manuel Zelaya Rosales, arrives in Havana on Tuesday afternoon for an
official visit at the invitation of the Cuban government.

This is Zelaya's fist visit to the island and it reflects the cordial
and friendly relations that exist between the governments of both
countries. It is also part of the historic and deep brotherhood and
solidarity ties between the two peoples.

Cuba and Honduras re-established diplomatic relations in January 2002.
Since 1998, after hurricane Mitch devastated part of Honduran
territory, nearly 1500 Cuban doctors and nurses have made their
contribution in the Central American nation.

Today, there are 400 Cuban doctors working in Honduras who have offered
almost 11 million treatments free of charge, including some 360,000
free-of-charge surgeries. In addition, there are currently almost 1000
Honduran youth studying on the island, 500 of them at the Latin
American School of Medicine in Havana.

During his stay in Cuba, the Honduran leader will hold official talks
with Cuban First Vice President Raul Castro. He will also participate
in the signing of a Treaty of Maritime Delimitation between Cuba and
Honduras and will tour places of educational, cultural and scientific
interest.
