FAO Official Impressed by Cuba's Attention for Expectant Mothers

Havana, Oct 15 (acn) The representative of the United Nation's Food and
Agriculture Organization (FAO) to Cuba, Marcio Porto, extolled the
Cuban government's attention for children and their mothers.

Porto visited a Maternity Home accommodating some 30 pregnant women in
the municipality of Artemisa, in Havana Province, which had received a
donation of fruit and vegetables from a local agricultural cooperative
as part of the National Campaign for World Food Day.

The FAO official pointed out that this initiative has been carried out
by Cuban farmers for several years to improve the diet of pregnant
women who have been accommodated in maternity homes because they live
too far from healthcare facilities or have any risk factor. Porto also
noted that this project has also contributed to a decrease in infant
mortality in many municipalities across the island.
