Chinese President Opens 17th Communist Party Congress

Havana, Oct 16 (acn) Chinese President Hu Jintao open the 17th Congress 
of the Communist Party of China with the presentation of a political 
report before an audience of 2.213 delegates.

The 75-page document reviews the work carried out in the five years 
since the last congress and lays out future goals for the party, 
reports Granma newspaper.
According to the document, the Asian giant's economy has grown at an 
average of 10 percent annually and the Communist Party has strengthened 
its leadership.

Problems cited by the report are related to resources, the environment 
and the wide gap between urban and rural standards of living; future 
policies include plans for greater social investment to improve the 
overall quality of life and to lower unemployment.

To guarantee social security for all, the report states that the 
country is pursuing a path to quadruple its per capita GDP by 2020.

The Communist Party of China has 73 million members.
