[Well, Al Gore is certainly the celebrity of the month. It would be
quite a climbdown for Gore to make any meaningful statements about
the Cuban 5, however... since they were surveilled, arrested,
mistreated, falsely charged, and put on trial in a kangaroo Miami court
under the administration of his old boss, Slick Willy Clinton.

We're not sure where this notion came from that Al Gore is so important
and that he can save the world. He isn't, and he can't. So Alfredo
Vera from Ecuador shouldn't hold his breath.

Consortium News also has still ANOTHER piece on Gore today. We're
sick of hearing about Al Gore. -NY Transfer ]

Al Gore Called Upon to Demand Freedom for Cuban Five

Havana, 16 oct (AIN) Ecuador's Guayasamín Foundation has sent a letter
to Nobel Peace Laureate, former US vice-President Al Gore, asking him
to join the international campaign undertaken to demand the freedom of
five Cuban antiterrorist fighters unjustly held in US jails for over
nine years.

In the message, the director of the Foundation's International Affairs
Department, Alfredo Vera, called on Gore to join the fight against the
injustices committed against Gerardo Hernandez, Antonio Guerrero, Ramon
Labanino, Fernando Gonzalez and Rene Gonzalez, internationally known as
the Cuban Five.

In his letter, Vera gives detailed information on the current situation
of the Five who were detained in 1998 for trying to prevent terrorist
actions organized by right-wing anti-Cuba groups based in Florida.

Vera noted that the men have been punished for crimes they have never
committed and denounced Washington's violation of basic human rights by
preventing the Five from meeting with their relatives.

The Ecuadorian official reminded Gore of the huge responsibility to
humanity that a Nobel Peace Award entails and said peace is a concept
that must embrace justice, solidarity and respect for human rights.

Vera also pointed out that several Nobel Laureates, along with
scholars, writers, scientists, journalists and political leaders from
around the world raise their voices every day demanding freedom for the
Cuban Five.
