"Fiesta de la Cubania" Celebrated in City of Bayamo
Bayamo, Oct 17 (acn) The annual folklore celebration "Fiesta de la
Cubania" kicked off this Wednesday in its usual venue of Bayamo, the
capital city of eastern Granma Province.
A conference on national identity opened the festivities, while the
closing gala will be hosted by the Conjunto Folclorico Nacional
(National Folklore Group) on October 20, Cuba's National Day of Culture.
Held every year since 1994, this fiesta is considered the most
important event celebrating Cuban Culture Day. Scheduled activities
include book fairs, conferences, stage performances, popular dances,
concerts, the screening of movies, and art exhibitions.
A solemn activity in the historical site known today as "Plaza del
Himno" will recall the first time the national anthem was sung on this
spot on October 20, 1868, which eventually led to the special
designation of the day.
Local fiestas are taking place in every locality of the country as part
of the country’s Week of Culture. The Prado promenade, in Old Havana,
has already witnessed presentations of books, concerts and dances by
the Litz Alfonso Ballet.
Jazz, choral, lyrical and orchestra music will characterize the gala
scheduled for the Amadeo Roldan Auditorium Theater in Havana on the
evening of October 20.
This date will also mark the start of the 2007 Icograda World Design
Congress, hosted by Havana's Conventions Center until October 26, and
focusing this year on fresh perspectives on the intersection of
contemporary culture and the evolution of design.
