Many Visually Impaired People Benefit from Cuban Rehab System

Havana, Oct 22 (acn) More that 1,600 Cuban and foreign students, mostly
from Latin America, have studied at the National Center of
Rehabilitation for the Blind and Visually Impaired People in this
capital, which has its 17th anniversary on Monday.

Classified by Cuban President Fidel Castro as one of the most
humanitarian works of the Revolution, the educational center trains the
pupils in the specialized techniques in the use of the stick, in the
Braille reading and writing system, and in the use of the abacus to
make quick and complex mathematical operations.

Director of the center, Jose Raul Baquet, noted that a classroom for
the teaching of computer sciences has been recently opened, which also
gives access to the students to virtual portals, and international
meetings and courses for people with visual impairments.

The celebration of the anniversary includes a number of cultural
activities and a ceremony to pay homage to those who have contributed
to the good functioning of the institution with their daily activity.
