CIA Chief for Internal Inquiry
Washington, Oct 23 (Prensa Latina) The director of the Central
Intelligence Agency, Michael Hayden, reiterated the need to go ahead
with the investigation of the institution, began by Inspector General
John Helgerson, according to The New York Times.
For General Hayden, the inquiry into the agency and its inspector is
the beginning of a process to clarify certain irregularities in the
institution's program of investigations.
Special agent Robert Deitz will head the investigation, and should
report on it next week.
Hayden's decision has been criticized by Republicans, who sustain the
process could threaten to undermine the independence of Helgerson's
office.
The review is focused particularly on complaints that his office has
not acted as a fair and impartial judge of agency operations.
That office has led probes into some of the most polemical CIA programs
since 2001, chiefly issues linked to interrogations of suspected
terrorists.
