More Bad News for Bush and US-based Anti-Cuba Circles
By Sara Estevez
Cubanow.- The resignation last Friday by Senator Mel Martinez from his
post as president of the US Republican Party sent a discouraging sign
to Miami-based Anti-Cuba organizations and President Bush, who has seen
the departure of several cabinet officials.
Martinez, who led the Republican Party for the past 10 months,
represented the ultra-right Cuban American circles at the White House
and he was described by Congress woman Iliana Ros-Lehtinen as “the
hope” since his appointment. At the time he took office, Mel already
had considerable embezzlement records from his work as head of the US
Housing and Urban Development Department.
Mel Martinez’s participation in the stealing of the Cuban Havana Club
trademark is well known. He did it in the interest of the Bacardi rum
enterprise, which supported and financed the promoters of the
extraterritorial Helms-Burton Law.
According to speculations, Mel resigned because he wants to dedicate
himself to his own “political career”, though his case is different
from those who have decided not to keep involved in the scandals the US
President, because Mel Martinez simply is a man of the Bush clan.
