Guatemala: Elections to be Conducted Fairly
Guatemala, Nov 4 (Prensa Latina) Guatemalans will elect this Sunday
their future president under the kind glance of thousands of observers,
spread all over the territory to guarantee the normal development of
voting.
The observatory organized by the state University of San Carlos, the
Archbishop and Human Rights Office, reported that more than 4,000
volunteers will be present at voting centers to control the event.
A similar number was trained by the civil organization Mirador
Electoral, mainly formed by young people coming from all departments.
These people will be the ones in charge of transferring the information
to a computer center where fast counting will be made, and Mirador
hopes to give results to authorities three hours after the closing of
polls.
The two contender organizations, Unidad Nacional de la Esperanza
(National Unit of the Hope) and PP (Patriotic Party) will also have
their own system of control, in addition to the public prosecutors
located in each one of the 13,756 voting tables.
According to a report of Mirador Electoral, in the first round of
elections on September 9, the majority of the problems detected were
the use of false identity cards and other deficiencies.
On Sunday, 5 900 000 Guatemalans are summoned to go vote for the future
president and vice-president, who will take office on January 14, 2008.
