Heavy Rains Cause Millions in Losses in Eastern Cuba

Havana, Nov 8 (acn) Cuban authorities reported that intense rains 
between October 11 and November 5 in the eastern provinces amounts to 
499 million dollars. The death of a man, who was trying to cross an 
overflowed river, was also reported.

The preliminary estimates show that the majority of losses, $305 
million, were located in agricultural and forestry production, 
including $91 million in lost crops and $78 million to replant. Damage 
to buildings and homes is rated at $128 million, $127 million to 
housing alone, as 1,137 houses were totally destroyed, 2,548 suffered 
partial damage, 7,939 lost their entire roofs and 10,363 had partial 
roof damage.

The road infrastructure in the region was severely affected. An 
estimated 13,169 kilometers of roads and highways were damaged in any 
way. Likewise, rail lines, sewer pipes, bridges and electric lines were 
highly damaged at a cost of some $33 millions.

Losses in the production of goods and services are estimated at $20 
million. An additional $9.9 million has so far been used for protecting 
the population and $1.2 million in fuel costs.

The preliminary figures could increase as a more complete analysis is 
carried out.
