Flood Evacuees Enjoy Cuban Artists' Performances
Havana, Nov 9 (acn) A program of cultural and recreational activities
is being carried out for people who were evacuated from their homes in
the Cuban eastern provinces due to the huge floods caused by tropical
storm Noel.
The initiative goes back to 2005, when several Cuban coastal
communities were hard hit by Hurricane Dennis and brigades of cultural
workers used the arts as a way to deal with the difficult times,
reports Granma newspaper.
Today, while material and human resources are readied for the recovery
of the communities still flooded, a mobile video unit of the provincial
cinema center, musical groups, professional artists and art students
are taking diverse cultural programs to the affected areas.
The experience is in response to a call from the local Institute of
Sports, Physical Education and Recreation, the Union of Artists and
Writers of Cuba, the Hermanos Saiz Association, other cultural
institutions and the Young Communist League.
In Bayamo, evacuees from the Cauto River municipality welcomed a bus
bringing the Andante Theater Group. The troupe is known nationally for
its performances in remote and mountainous communities as well as in
urban centers of the eastern province of Granma.
When the time comes for the children and adults to return home from the
temporary shelters, they will take with them the educational message
from the Andante comedy, which deals with current situations in the
communities.
Workers of the Aedes aegypti mosquito vector elimination campaign
partake in the performance urging people to fight the spread of the
dengue fever producing insects in the days following the heavy rains
and flooding.
