PRESS ADVISORY

GRANNY PEACE BRIGADE TO HOLD FIRST TEACH-IN AIMED AT CLOSING GUANTANAMO
AND OTHER U.S. MILITARY BASES ON FOREIGN SOIL

The Granny Peace Brigade, the group of anti-war grandmothers
known for their arrest and incarceration in October 2005 when they
attempted to enlist in the military at the Times Square Recruiting
Center, will hold a Teach-In on Sunday, November 11, Veterans' Day, at
the Parish Hall at St. Mark's Church in the Bowery, from 4 to 6 PM.
Alarmed at the huge number of American military bases on foreign soil
and the increasing number of new ones proposed, the Grannies are having
this first Teach-In to bring this dire situation to the public's
attention.

The Teach-In will be dedicated to the memory of David Cline, the
national coordinator of Vietnam Veterans Against the War and co-founder
of Veterans for Peace, who passed away Sept. 15th, 2007.

"Global opposition to the presence of U.S. military bases is
growing, and yet the American public knows very little about it," said
Nydia Leaf, one of the organizers of the event.

Guest speakers include Hugh Bruce (Veterans for Peace); Michael
Ratner and Lynne Kates (Center for Constitutional Rights); Al Marder
(World Peace Council); Elsa Rassbach (American Voices Abroad); Regina
Birchem (Women's International League for Peace and Freedom), and Frank
Velgara (Vieques Libre). The Teach-In will be moderated by famed
actress/playwright Vinie Burrows, who is a Permanent Representative at
the United Nations for the Women's International Democratic Federation.

Songs symbolizing the theme of the Teach-In will be performed
-- The Raging Grannies will sing "Extraordinary Rendition," and ASCAP
Award winner Joan Wile will sing her original song, "Guantanamo."

Some startling facts about American bases abroad:

a.. The US maintains foreign military bases in 130 countries. There
are bases on every continent except Antarctica.

b.. The Pentagon keeps secret the precise number of bases but admits
to 737.

c.. These comprise more than 95% of the world's foreign military
bases.

d.. U.S. foreign bases operate beyond the control of the occupied
nation. Killings, sexual assaults, pollution, drug use, are typical of
crimes perpetrated against the local population.
