Ibero-Am Summit Approves Action Program

Santiago, Chile, Nov 11 (Prensa Latina) The 17th Ibero-American Summit
on Social Cohesion, which concluded here on Saturday and was attended
by 22 leaders from the region, approved a 53-item Action Program and
issued ten special communiqués.

The program, which complements the Santiago Declaration, contains
several items aimed at boosting citizens' protection systems in the
fields of social security, public health, education and jobs, among
other spheres.

It also deals with protection of ethnic minorities, youths and children.

The program notes the implementation of an accord to develop the
Ibero-American Agreement on Social Security and other mechanisms of
regional cooperation.

Among the special communiqués, the Summit issued one demanding an end
to the Washington-imposed blockade of Cuba and condemning the impunity
enjoyed by terrorist Luis Posada Carriles in the United States.

The Summit also called Argentina and Great Britain to resume
negotiations on the sovereignty over the Malvinas (Falkland) Islands,
off the former's coast.

In another communiqué, the Ibero-American heads of State and Government
lamented natural disasters that hit Mexico, Cuba, Haiti, Honduras,
Nicaragua, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic and Peru recently.

They also noted the importance of boosting policies to protect the
indigenous peoples from discrimination and marginalization, and to
preserve the indigenous languages.

The Ibero-American leaders also issued a communiqué declaring 2008 the
Year of Ibero-American Youths.
