Summit of Heads of State Underlined Need for Social Cohesion
Havana, Nov 12 (acn) The 17th Ibero-Latin American Summit of Heads of
State and Government wound up in Santiago de Chile over the weekend
after adopting the Declaration of Santiago, which focused on social
unity.
Different heads of state made speeches during the closing session of
the meeting on Saturday to defend their countries' stances on issues
like energy, political and social models and the respect to the
sovereignty of nations. Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega demanded the
lifting of the over-45-year US economic, financial and commercial
blockade of Cuba; he also criticized the UN Security Council and asked
for the creation of funds to back new policies, social and economic
models developing in South countries in favor of social cohesion.
Meanwhile, Bolivian President Evo Morales called for adoption of a new
economic model and the abandonment of neo-liberal policies; and
Venezuela's Hugo Chavez, on his part, denounced ongoing conspiracy
against his country.
The statements by different heads of state addressed the contradictions
that have prevailed since the colonial period up to the adoption of
neo-liberal models. They also reflected the countries' positions in the
defense of their liberties. Cuba stressed the validity of the debate,
which allowed each country to expose its own concerns and
considerations.
