Risk of Ecological Disaster in Ukraine

Kiev, Nov 12 (Prensa Latina) The spillage of hundreds of tons of oil
from three Russian tankers and the sinking of two cargo ships with
sulphur in the Kerch Strait threaten to cause an ecological disaster in
the zone, Ukrainian sources indicated.

The Ministry for Emergency Situations revealed on Monday that the oil
spilled formed two parallel slicks of about a mile and a quarter long
by over 650 feet wide, with Tuela Island surrounded by the fuel.

In a meeting in Simferopol to analyze measures to face the catastrophe,
the Russian side affirmed three crew members of the Najichevan tanker
were found dead on the shore, while another five are still missing.

Authorities also expressed concern over two of the seven ships that
were wrecked Sunday due to a hurricane in the autonomous Ukrainian
region of Crimea, which is still hindering rescue and cleanup
operations in the area.

Meanwhile, a third ship carrying sulphur is taking in water in the same
region.
