Ricardo Alarcon Receives Danielle Mitterrand

Havana, Nov 13 (acn) Cuban Parliament President Ricardo Alarcon,
received the president of the France-Libertés NGO, Danielle Mitterrand,
who is in Cuba to participate in the 15th Solidarity Encounter of City
Halls with Havana.

During the meeting, on Monday, both officials discussed the current
problems linked to fresh water availability around the world and
stressed the necessity to implement a program of actions to deal with
that scourge which affects millions of people.

According to United Nations sources, some 1.1 billion people have no
access to an adequate fresh water supply. Numerous specialists consider
that the fulfilment of the Millennium Goals on the reduction of that
figure by 2015 will be very difficult to attain.

Alarcon and Miterrand also agreed that the poor quality of water has
lead to the increase of health problems in several regions of the
planet.

France-Libertés is a non-government organization, which was founded in

1986 to promote human rights, with particular emphasis on environment
issues and the people's right to access to drinking water as a human
heritage.

The NGO also promotes social awareness on those issues around the
world. Danielle Mitterrand has maintained a position in support of
Cuba's sovereignty and independence and against the over-45-year US
economic, financial and commercial blockade of the island and
imperialist aggressions.
