Cuba Leads in Treatment of HIV-AIDS
By Ernest Diaz
Cubanow.- When over 40 million people suffer from HIV-AIDS around the
world, Cuba maintains a leading role in the medical treatment of that
disease. The island programs and action in that regard is the focal
point of the 6th Congress on Healthcare and Epidemiology underway in
Havana.
At present Cuba guarantees HIV-AIDS patients an excellent quality of
life, and administers them six powerful antiretroviral medications.
The Cuban free health care system has offered treatment to
sera-positives since the virus appeared for the first time on the
island three decades ago.
Over 600 specialists from around the world are gathering in the
congress, which will also address the island’s vaccination campaigns,
which have been carried out periodically.
The promotion of a healthier life style was on the spotlight of a
symposium held during the congress. Cuban expert Alfredo Espinosa
lectured on the important role played by the Cuban media, education
workers and grassroots and social organizations in the promotion of
health-related actions at community level.
