Republicans Favor Rich Candidates for Congress

Washington, Nov 26 (Prensa Latina) The US Republican Party will try to
reduce the fund raising difference with the Democratic Party by
recruiting rich candidates, local media reported on Monday.

In their race for the 2008 elections, in which Congress will also be
renovated, the Republicans are way behind the Democrats.

In that regard, the New York Sun reported that Republicans have
implemented a plan to favor the richest party members who could
contribute large sums of money to finance the raise to the Capitol.

The National Republican Committee plans to launch three Congressional
candidates in a dozen districts where Democratic lawmakers are about to
conclude their terms and are regarded as vulnerable.

These rich Republicans have already invested between 100,000 and one
million dollars to fund their campaigns, 11 months before the elections.

The parliamentary elections in November 2006 cost US politicians 2.6
billion dollars, institutional sources said.

According to estimates by the independent group Center for Responsible
Politics, that amount of money accounted for an 18-percent increase
compared to the previous mid-term elections in 2002.

The candidates to the House of Representatives spent an average of
760,000 dollars each, while Senate candidates spent about 5.8 million
dollars each.
