First Gitmo Prisoners Moved via Spain

Madrid, Nov 25 (Prensa Latina) The first 23 prisoners moved by the
United States from Afghanistan to the illegal naval base in Guantanamo,
Cuba, made a stopover in Sevilla, Spain, "El Pais" newspaper reported
Sunday.

The daily stated the then President of the Spanish Government Jose
Maria Aznar agreed with Washington a reform of the 1989 bilateral
defense accord to soften regulations on US stopovers in Spanish air
bases of Rota and Moron.

The publication details an investigation in which that group of
prisoners "was the first occupant of a field of incomparable prisoners
in democratic societies."

It adds that those prisoners moved from a C-17 to a C-141 plane in the
air base of Moron de la Frontera, in Sevilla, and arrived in the US
naval base in the illegally occupied Cuban territory of Guantanamo.

The fact that those prisoners touched Spanish soil was confirmed by the
British lawyers' office Reprieve, representative of 50 inmates in
Guantanamo.

According to El Pais, the number of prisoners who have overflown or
made stopovers in Spain enroute to Guantanamo could surpass 100.

The same daily published two weeks ago that some 50 airplanes crossed
the Spanish air space between 2002 and 2007 to or from the US naval
base in Guantanamo and about 10 touched down at Spanish airports.
