Koenigsberg's Seminar on War at Fordham University
Friday evenings at 6:45 PM, November 16-December 21, 2007
Fordham University Lincoln Center
Room 311
Friday, November 30, 2007 - 6:45 PM
The work of awakening from the nightmare of history continues.
ALL ARE WELCOME TO ATTEND THE SEMINAR.
SEE DETAILS BELOW ON HOW TO GET THERE.
Before the 1991 Gulf War, Saddam Hussein told his Generals that
Iraqi forces would put up a better fight than they thought. There
would be many casualties on both sides, but only Iraq was willing
to accept casualties. "Americans are not."
"The American people are weak," he proclaimed, "They will not accept
the loss of large numbers of their soldiers."
Speaking to reporters on September 2004 when the insurgency in Iraq
was heating up, Donald Rumsfeld stated that people had underestimated
the character of the American people.
Enemies of the United States, he declared, "Should not UNDERESTIMATE
THE WILLINGNESS OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE TO SUFFER CASUALTIES IN IRAQ
AND ELSEWHERE."
Donald Rumsfeld accepted the gauntlet that had been laid down by
Saddam Hussein. "Do not imagine that the American people are weak.
We too will allow our soldiers to die."
After September 11, President George Bush said that "Out of this
evil will come good, as youngsters all of a sudden understand the
definition of sacrifice. So America is sacrifice."
This session will discuss how the United States overcame the military
policy that had dominated the 1990s--a desire to avoid battle
casualties at all cost--and once again embraced the ideology of
warfare, that is, a philosophy of life revolving around the proposition
that it is "sweet and fitting to die for one's country" (Horace).
With regards,
Richard Koenigsberg
