Climate Change Threatens Human Race, Says UN Secretary General
Havana, Dec 12 (acn) The human race could face extinction if it doesn't
confront global warming, warned UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on
Tuesday at the Climate Change Conference underway in Bali.
Ban Ki-moon addressed the conference during debates on a new document
to intensify the call to wealthy nations to reduce their greenhouse gas
emissions that lead to global warming, reports Granma newspaper.
The secretary-general arrived to Bali to preside over the final days of
the two-week conference that seeks to establish an agenda and time
frame for talks leading to a pact on combating climate change to
replace the Kyoto Protocol in 2012.
"The situation is so desperately serious that any delay could push us
past the tipping point, beyond which the ecological, financial and
human costs would increase dramatically. We are at a crossroad. One
path leads to a comprehensive climate-change agreement, the other to
oblivion. The choice is clear," warned Ban Ki-moon as criticism mounts
towards the stance taken by the United States, Canada and Japan over
their refusal to join a consensus while rejecting any agreement on the
issue.
