New Possibilities for Treating Chronic Cancer
Havana, Dec 12 (acn) With treatments that are more biologically based --
and less toxic -- people suffering certain types of cancer can be
treated as chronic patients, according to Cuban doctor Agustin Lage.
The director of the Cuban Center of Molecular Immunology (CIM) gave a
presentation on the topic to 400 participants at the 3rd International
Congress of Pharmacology and Therapeutics.
In statements to ACN, Dr. Lage emphasized that the possibility of
treating certain cancers as chronic diseases changes the whole concept
of the terrible illness. He explained that there are many incurable
diseases that can be controlled, such as diabetes. Moreover, patients
can have a good life for around 40 years if they handle their condition
properly.
As with hypertension, said the doctor, we are getting closer to being
able to control certain types of cancer, and so the patient can have a
high quality of life as long as the tumor is kept under control, he
noted.
The concept of chronic control has long been used in endocrinology and
cardiology, but its use in relation to cancer patients is relatively
new, said Lage.
