Serbian Prime Minister Heads for New York

Belgrade, Dec 17 (Prensa Latina) Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav
Kostunica travels to New York on Monday to attend the December 19 UN
Security Council meeting for discussing the statute of the Serbian
province of Kosovo.

Kostunica will defend the integrity of Serbia and will request the
member states of the UN Security Council to support the continuation of
negotiations on the future status of Kosovo.

The prime minister considers that an agreed solution can be found
through talks to please Albania-Kosovo leaders, who with the support of
the US and some European countries threat to declare the independence
of Kosovo.

He will also ask the UN to avoid that unilateral declaration of
sovereignty since it represents a threat to peace in the Balkans.

A report presented by the mediating troika on talks between Serbia and
Albania-Kosovo leaders will be discussed at the Security Council
meeting on December 19.

Belgrade-Pristina talks ended on December 10 without reaching a
compromise.
