Alejo Carpentier Awards Announced in Cuba

Havana, Dec 26 (acn) On the occasion of the 103th anniversary of the
birth of Alejo Carpentier, the Cuban Book Institute and the Letras
Cubanas Publishing House have announced the winners of the national
fiction prize named after the Cuban writer.

The Alejo Carpentier Awards went to three outstanding Cuban writers:
Margarita Mateo, Gina Picart and Alberto Garrandés.

Mateo, who is best known as a critic and essayist, presented her first
novel "Desde los blancos manicomios," ("From the White Mental
Hospital"), which won her the award. The jury highlighted her language
skills, and the creation of a universe with multiple meanings.

Another award that came up as a surprise was that to Alberto Garrandes,
who won in the essay category, though he is recognized as a short-story
writer, with his work "El concierto de las fábulas" ("Concert of
Fables").

It deals with fictional stories, history and imagination of the Cuban
narrative of the 1960s.

For the originality of the topics she dealt with in her work and for
her masterly handling of language, writer and journalist Gina Picart
won her award with her notebook "Oil on Canvas."
