Cuba Pays Tribute to Garcia Marquez with New Edition of His Masterpiece

Havana, Dec 26 (acn) A new edition of "One Hundred Years of Solitude"
will be presented at 7pm today in Pabellon Cuba exhibition hall in
Havana. The new publication commemorates the 80th birthday of
the author, Nobel Prize Laureate in Literature Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

The book includes illustrations by famous painter Roberto Favelo and
was conceived by the Cuban Book Institute and the Art and Literature
Publishing House as a tribute to the celebrated Colombian writer,
reported Granma newspaper.

The new edition also coincides with the 40th anniversary of the first
publication of the book in 1967, which revolutionized the international
perspective on 20th century Latin American fiction.

"One Hundred Years of Solitude" is considered Garcia Marquez's
masterpiece. The novel chronicles a family's struggle, and the history
of their fictional town, Macondo, over a century.

In his autobiography, "Living to Tell the Tale," Garcia Marquez
acknowledges that Macondo was created based on the towns where he grew
up. Like many other of his novels, "One Hundred Years of Solitude"
crosses genres, combining elements of history, magical realism, and
pure fiction.

The Colombian writer visited the island early in December, to attend
the 29th edition of the Havana's New Latin American Cinema Festival.
