Cuban Athletes End 2007 with 75 Tickets to Beijing Olympics
Havana, Dec 26 (acn) The number of tickets earned by Cuba to the
Beijing 2008 Olympic Games increased to 75 with the win over Canada in
the recently concluded NORCECA Women's Continental Volleyball
Championship.
With this victory, volleyball became the 13th sport to qualify
for Beijing, and the women's volleyball team became the second
team in the list.
Cuban sports that have so far qusliied for Beijing are volleyball (12
tickets), baseball (24), diving (3), wrestling (5), archery(1),
canoeing(2), judo (5), weight lifting (6), pentathlon (1), rowing (9),
tae kwon do (3), shooting (3) and cycling (1).
Experts of the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and
Recreation (INDER) said that more than 30 Cuban athletes have the
score or timing to qualify. Cuba intends to participate in 20 of the 28
categories competing.
Other sports with high chances of qualifying are boxing,
basketball (women), football, volleyball (men), and table tennis.
Cuba treasures its 65 gold medals in the Olympic Games, 55 silver and
52 bronze, and finished in eleventh position in Athens 2004 with 9-7-11.
